As a girl who has been proposed to (and wed), my high school class ring fit on his pinky. That's how he got mine the right size.

If you can contrive to make a joke (or other reason) out of tying a piece of string/paper loosely around her finger and get it off without loosing the loop, that works too. Tie one around your own finger and make it a game of some kind. *shrug
I also wouldn't ask friends/family if you don't want her to know...it's too obvious, and quite often, they'll end up telling your gal....

Just hold her hand some time and compare her ring finger to one of yours closest to it's size. If your hands are a lot bigger than hers (which is a possibility) I'd go with the stealing (borrowing) a ring sort of thing.
And just pray that the reason she doesn't wear it often is because it doesn't fit anymore.

Shes a tiny lil thang, so I dunno if I can get away with that.. And yeah, thats one of my biggest fears is that it wont fit >.< Thats like buying a grands' worth of boy's baby cloths for your cusion before realizing they're a girl.

That would almost be funny if ... well, probably never.
That aside, I'm sure you're a real Lothario.

well i dont know if its the same over there in Boston, but here in the UK, rings sometimes have the size marked on the inside of them. It's the only way I remember what size I am, coz if i look inside one of mine it has an 'L' engraved; it can be very hard to make out, but could be worth sneaking a look at any of hers just in case.

Look in her jewelry chest for a ring she never wears! The only problem with this is the chance she doesn't wear it because she's gained/lost weight and it doesn't fit anymore, but if you've seen her wearing it then chances are it is perfect.

I tried this once on my girlfriend--ended up drinking the wrong drink and now am married to some burly sailor in Bok Thai.
I would not suggest this route--but then again--I do get nice postcards
Actually--the buying a dummy ring works well. Esp. if you ask her mom or sister or best friend for her size--then buy the friendship/promise ring. It would throw her off your trail if one of them told her you asked about her size.

LMAO funnist thing all day. And yeah, I've come up with a plan based on all your suggestions: I'm going to compair her fingers to mine and then find an old ring of hers that seems would fit by compairison, bring it into the shop and have them make her a nice gemstone ring of that size. If it fits, I'm golden. I apprecaite everything guys, I really do. And I'm sure my gal will too once she gets her ring hehe.

There's an old practice about tying a string around your finger to remember something. If you can work up a story around that, then you've got your measurement.

If you can't get one of her rings...
Get some of those *really* cheap plastic rings out of vending machine or the toy aisle in your grocery store. Give her a couple to try on (make a game out of it) Make a big deal about how important it is you to find the perfect crappy ring for her.
Basically make a big deal out of it and be sure to notice the rings and how they are being expanded and such.
Then drop the subject, don't make another mention of it and she'll forget (she will want to keep many of the rings or the memory (or whatever it is you girls do stuff like that).
Best part is, you've now got a great way to suprise her with the real ring. Start playing the same game and this time, somewhere in the middle give her the real ring instead of one of the crappy fake ones.

Buy a Yo-Yo, give it to her as a gift, put the loop on her ring finger tell her you need to mark it so that when she takes it off and has someone else play with it she can reset it to the place that fits her. then you either take the string to the jewler and get the size or you undo the loop and measure the opening.
